Subtraction Jingle
More on the top...no need to stop." ~This just means that there is no need to regroup.
"Number is the same, zero is the game."~For example, 8-8.
"More on the floor, go next door."~This just means that you don't have enough so you need to regroup. I tell them it is like borrowing sugar from your neighbor if you run out and need more.
All of the above statements help the kiddos decide what to do when subtracting in the ones column. Unfortunately, some kiddos just start regrouping without checking which of the above 3 situations they are in.
When they do have to regroup, the rest of the jingle, goes like this.
"Cross out, two times, two times." ~Please insist that they cross out both digits in the top numbers so they can properly rename them.
"The tens become one less and the ones become ten more." ~This means that whatever digit is in the tens column should be decreased by one and the number in the ones column should go up by ten.
